I am not gone. My soul lives on, but in a better place surrounded by the Light of God in all His Glory and Grace...
We, the staff and management of Charles Edwards Funeral Home & Cremations, mourn with the Harris family in the death of Mrs Alma Smith Harris, age 91, of Grifton, NC who departed this life on Thursday, November 1, 2018 in the comfort of her home.
Alma was born May 14, 1927 in Jones County to the late Warren Smith, Sr. and the late Daisy Ann Gooding Smith. She received her formal education in the Lenoir County School System. She received Jesus Christ at an early age at Simero FWB Church of LaGrange, NC. Church was a very important part of her life. Alma moved from the LaGrange area, married, settled into raising a family, and made her home in Pitt and Craven Counties. For several years, she and the family lived in the Dover-Ft. Barnwell area and attended Alumn Spring Church of Christ. After moving to the Grifton area, she attended several local churches. Later in life, she enjoyed watching televised religious programs.
Alma was primarily a homemaker but also engaged in farm work while raising her family. When her children were teenagers, she found employment with Palace Motel in New Bern, NC as a cook. She took great pleasure in becoming an independent woman and worked there until she quit in order to care for her ailing husband. Alma was a very kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She was full of great wisdom and spoke kindly to all. Anytime someone visited, they were always made to feel welcomed and comfortable at her home. Alma wasn’t satisfied until she could convince you to eat! She loved cooking and sharing a meal; and, she wasn’t reserved in telling you when she thought you needed to “eat one biscuit instead of two”--followed by, “but you look good, as long as you’re healthy, just take good care of yourself”. Alma gave us ‘Forever’ love, lots of hugs, and she will be immeasurably missed.
Alma was the devoted wife to the late Charlie Alfred Harris for 47 years. She was the beloved mother to six sons and three daughters: Charlie Howard Harris (Bettie Dudley) of Clarksville, TN; Gladys “Ilean” Smith (Allen Smith) of Missouri City, TX; Geraldine Harris Bunai (Mihai Bunai, deceased) of NYC; Robert Alfred Harris of the home/New Bern, NC; Norman Earl Harris (deceased); Willie Esau Harris of the Philippines; David Harris of the home; Caesar Limon Harris (Cynthia Owens) of Knightdale, NC; and, Diane Harris Clark (George Earl Clark, deceased) of the home. Alma was the cherished grandmother to 14 grandchildren (including Catherine Clark and David Harris, Jr. of the home) and 16 great-grandchildren. She was also a beloved mother figure to her children’s friends, including three special daughters: Shirley Temple Edwards Mitchell, Tessie Banks, and Evelyn “Sister” Brown Mitchell. Alma was the fourth oldest of eight siblings: Warren Smith Jr. (deceased); Thelma Smith Nichols (deceased); George Washington “JW” Smith, Sr. (deceased); Joseph “Lee” Smith of LaGrange, NC; Ezekial “Zeke” Smith of Chesapeake, VA; Henry Smith, Sr. (deceased); and, Josephine Smith Taylor (deceased). She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends to cherish her memory.
