We, the staff and management of Charles Edwards Funeral Home mourn with the Sutton Family in the loss of their loved one, Mr. Joshua Hicks Sutton, 89, of Greensboro, NC (formerly of the Ayden Community) who transitioned on Friday May 8, 2020.
Mr. Joshua Hicks Sutton was born August 12, 1930 in Edgecombe County, NC to the late Joseph D. and Eva Bell Baker Sutton. He was educated in the Craven County School System and joined Zion Chapel Free Will Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop C.R. Parker. “HICKS” as he was affectionately known, spent most of his adult life in Newark, NJ where he worked in the steel industry and was a gifted singer in various quartets.
He met and married Minnie Bell Cannon. To this union seven children were born. After her death he met and married the former Mrs. Roberta Whitaker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sons; Curtis Cannon, Thurman Sutton and Clarence Sutton. One daughter; Barbara Sutton. Two brothers, four sisters and one stepson; Bernard Whitaker.
“HICKS” leaves to cherish his memory: His wife; Mrs. Roberta W. Sutton of the home. One son; Joshua Sutton, Jr. of Ayden NC. Two daughters; Brenda Sutton and Valerie Sutton of Newark, NJ. One stepdaughter; Jamallah Mohammed of Greensboro NC. Two stepsons; Curtis Price of Newark, NJ and Orlando Price of Columbus, OH. Theee brothers; George Sutton (Aletha) of East Orange, NJ. Joe Sutton of Ayden, NC and James Sutton of New Bern, NC. along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Graveside service will convene on Wednesday May 13, 2020 at 12noon in Live Oak Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. A walk through viewing will be on Tuesday May 12, 2020 from 2:00pm until 6:00pm in the Chapel of Charles Edwards Funeral Home.
