We, the staff and management of Charles Edwards Funeral Home mourn with the Powell Family in the loss of their loved one, Ms. Sheila Watkins Powell.
Sheila Kay Watkins Powell was born in Carbondale, Illinois, on February 8, 1956, to the late Henry Watkins. Sr. and Betty Boyd. She departed this earthly life on Monday, January 27, 2020, at Franklin Hospital, in Benton, IL. In addition to her parents, Sheila was predeceased by two brothers, Henry Watkins, Jr. and Malcolm “Moo” Watkins.
Sheila was married to Benjamin Franklin Powell. Together, they are the parents of three children.
Sheila attended Carbondale High School, and upon graduating, she enlisted in the United States Army where she reached the rank of Sergeant. She was honorably discharged after 10 years of faithful service to our Country. Upon completion of her military career, she began work at Moen Inc. in Kinston, NC where she worked for over 15 years. While working full time at Moen, and rearing three children, Sheila went back to school at Lenoir Community College and obtained an Associate Degree in Accounting.
Sheila’s hobbies were crossword puzzles, cooking, and spending quality time with her family and friends. She especially adored her children and grandchildren. Sheila was loved by many, and will be remembered for her kind, compassionate heart. Sheila had a zeal for life, and a witty, jovial spirit, that will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Benjamin Franklin Powell of Selma, NC; her children, Jamie Christine Watkins Brown (Antwan) of California, MD, Anthony Tyrone Powell (Kim) of Greenville, NC, and Shalisa Denise Powell of Pink Hill, NC; brothers, Bruce Watkins (Kathy) of Benton, IL, and Bryan Watkins (Cassie) of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Kathy Worley (James) of Bakersfield, CA, and Karen Upchurch (Ralph) of Benton, IL; fourteen grandchildren, Khari, Jamecia “Jam”, Kendrick, Layla, Ariana, Seth, Elias, Iya, Madison, Xavier “Tank”, Kalil “Daddy”, Kaliya “Juicy”, Caitlin, and Calin; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends.
Funeral services will be Monday February 3, 2020 at 3:00pm in Hull Road FWB Church, 2660 Hwy 258 North, Kinston NC with Pastor Wandra Williams, Officiating. There will be no burial.
