We, the staff and management of Charles Edwards Funeral Home mourn with the Jones Family in the loss of their loved one, Ms. Verlinda Jones of Greenville NC who died Saturday January 11, 2020 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice.
Verlinda Jones was born on November 10, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York to Randolph Jones Sr. (deceased) and Rosa Mae Jones (deceased). She was raised in Brooklyn, New York however, moved to Roosevelt, Long Island where she lived for eleven years before retiring. After retiring in 2009, she moved to Greenville, North Carolina. Verlinda passed peacefully from this world into the hands of God on January 11, 2020.
Verlinda married Harvey Lee Davis in May of 1983. To this union was born her pride and joy, Christopher Davis.
Verlinda graduated with honors from Oneonta State University in 1976 with a Bachelor in Elementary Education. She was awarded a Fellowship to attend Boston University where she pursued and earned a Master of Science in Special Education in January of 1978. Verlinda also completed an advanced degree in Administration and Supervision from Long Island University in New York. For thirty-one years she worked for the Department of Education in New York City as a devoted Special Education teacher for twenty-two years, and a dedicated Assistant Principal for nine years.
Verlinda accepted Jesus as her personal savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Brownsville under the leadership of Pastors R.D. Dixon, T. Franklin Strange, and Bishop A.D. Lyons, of whom all are deceased. As a member of First Baptist, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. After moving to Long Island, New York Verlinda joined Second Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Preston H. Drinks. As a member of Second Baptist, Verlinda was the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and served as a prayer leader for the Pastor’s Aide Ministry. In 2009, Verlinda joined Koinonia Christian Center Church in Greenville, North Carolina under the leadership of Bishop Rosie S. O’neal. After joining Koinonia, Verlinda volunteered at the Hospice Inpatient Center, mentored a middle school student, and participated in various activities in the church, such as Feed the Hungry.
Verlinda was proceeded in death by her father, Randolph Jones, Sr., brother, Randolph Jones Jr, and mother, Rosa Mae Jones.
Verlinda leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories her son, Christopher Davis; two sisters, Yolanda Jones and Susan Gray; two nephews, Lamar Tyson Jones and Marquise Jarran Jones (spouse, Sabrina); niece, Nyrobi Jones; sister-in-law, Janice Ware-Jones; brother-in-law, Jessie Gray; three aunts, Geneva Delaine, Alfreda Fonville and Sarah Brown; and two uncles, Charlie Brown and James Fonville; a host of cousins, extended family members and friends.
Family is not always blood. A special thanks to her neighbors, especially Darlynn Sakowski and family; special thanks to her sister/brother-friends, Milanie Spearman, Sharon Hall and Jesse Brooks.
The Celebration of Life service will be Thursday January 16, 2020 at 12:00 noon from The Koinonia Christian Center Church, 1405 SW Greenville Blvd with Bishop Rosie S. O'Neal officiating. The viewing will be held from 11:00am until the hour of the service. *This will be the LAST viewing prior to the service.
Entombment will take place on Saturday January 18, 2020 at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale NY
